「Spring Dragon」

These works are by the Japanese painter Shunryu Aoki, who lives in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture.
She studied Nihonga (Japanese painting) at Kyoto University of the Arts and its graduate school,
and is currently continuing her research on Buddhist art at Koyasan University’s Department of Esoteric Buddhism.
Aoki’s paintings are characterized by a quiet, profound worldview, grounded in traditional techniques such as Ungen Saishiki (layered gradation coloring).
She also blends elements of calligraphy culture into her work.
Her recurring motifs include dragons, tigers, and dinosaurs—powerful creatures that reflect her pursuit of an expression that bridges tradition and contemporary sensibility.
Displayed here is her “Rain Falling on Asphalt” series, which began with a piece selected for the Exhibition of Japanese Nature.
This series explores urban landscapes and the fleeting traces of rain.
Raindrops falling on the cold surface of asphalt draw countless lines and circles, only to vanish immediately.
Through the techniques of Japanese painting, Aoki captures the transience and hidden beauty of these ephemeral moments.
Depicting urban scenes and disappearing phenomena in Nihonga is quite rare,
making this series a distinctive example of Aoki’s modern perspective.
It is a body of work where traditional craftsmanship meets the quiet beauty found in the everyday life of the present.
